They faced unimaginable challenges, braving the fierce opposition, unyielding gunfire, and the treacherous terrain.

    Y’all! Life is crazy when it comes to the way we compare ourselves to others. For years, I’d log onto “MySpace” and “TheFacebook” (did I age myself?) and see how my life stood up against others. I was measuring my success and failures to people who didn’t even know I existed (for the most part). I’d tell myself, “If only my life was as good as “so-and-so, I’d have it made.” That is stinking thinking. 

    As a teacher, I see firsthand how comparison can take over and dominate the lives of our students. Our kids are comparing themselves to anybody…and everybody who has a social media account. From “influencers” to musical stars, and movie stars to “freaking thugs”… today kids (and adults) are comparing themselves to everybody! The way social media platforms highlight the perceived “achievements and successes” of others, it’s no wonder that a culture of comparison has become an all-too-familiar part of life. 

    It is human nature to assess ourselves in relation to others, seeking validation and measuring our worth. However, what many folks fail to realize is that constant comparison has the potential to crush creativity and ultimately destroy the legacy we strive to create. I want to take a few minutes to dive into the paradox of comparison and explore its detrimental effects on creativity and the long-lasting impact it can have on our legacy.

    1. The Creativity Paradox:

    Comparison often emerges from a desire to excel and improve oneself, but it can unintentionally stifle creativity. When we constantly compare our work to that of others, we risk losing our unique voice and ideas. Originality and innovation thrive in an environment free from the constraints of comparison. By fixating on others’ achievements, we limit our own potential to explore uncharted territories and develop our creative abilities.

    1. The Dangers of Self-Doubt:

    Comparison breeds self-doubt, leading to a constant questioning of our abilities and worthiness. When we constantly compare ourselves to others, we start questioning whether our work is good enough, losing confidence in our own unique abilities. This self-doubt can paralyze our creative process, preventing us from taking risks and experimenting with new ideas. The cycle of comparison traps us in a never-ending loop of dissatisfaction and insecurity, hindering our creative growth.

    1. The Illusion of Success:

    Comparison often skews our perception of success and what it truly means to leave a lasting legacy. In our pursuit of recognition and validation, we may fall into the trap of equating success with external markers, such as accolades, awards, or societal approval. However, true creativity and a meaningful legacy are not measured by comparisons to others. They stem from an authentic expression of one’s unique talents and a genuine impact on the world. By succumbing to comparison, we risk compromising our true creative potential and diluting the significance of our legacy. Also…it’s important to remember that my idea of success and your (or someone else’s) idea of success may be two totally different concepts. Your “markers for success” may be (and should be) different from mine. Why? Because the goal or milestone I’m currently chasing is probably different than yours. And…if our goals are the same, there’s a good chance that the reasons and methods we are trying to attain the same outcome are totally different. I’m me…and you are you.

    1. Nurturing a Creative Mindset:

    To break free from the destructive effects of comparison and nurture our creative potential, it is crucial to adopt a healthy mindset. Here are a few strategies to consider:

    a) Embrace Uniqueness: Recognize that each individual possesses a distinctive set of talents and experiences. Embrace your unique qualities and use them as a foundation for your creative endeavors.

    b) Focus on Growth: Instead of fixating on others’ achievements, prioritize personal growth and improvement. Set goals that align with your creative vision and measure your progress based on your own development rather than external comparisons.

    c) Cultivate Inspiration: Seek inspiration from various sources, such as God, nature, art, or personal experiences. Engage in activities that foster creativity and fuel your passion, allowing ideas to flow organically.

    d) Collaborate, Don’t Compete: Instead of viewing others as competitors, seek collaboration and learning opportunities. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who encourage and support your creative journey.

    5. God’s Views on Comparison

    When examining the idea of comparison and its effects on creativity and legacy through a biblical lens, several principles come to light. Here are a few biblical principles that can be associated with this idea:

    1. Embracing our God-given uniqueness: The Bible affirms that each person is fearfully and wonderfully made. We are created with unique talents, abilities, and purposes. When we embrace our individuality, we honor God’s design and can contribute to the world in a way that reflects our distinctiveness. Comparing ourselves to others undermines the truth that we are each created with a specific purpose and set of gifts.

    Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. ~Psalm 139:14

    1. Contentment and gratitude: The Bible encourages us to find contentment in all circumstances. When we constantly compare ourselves to others, we often fall into the trap of discontentment, longing for what others have or questioning our own worth. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude for what we have been given allows us to focus on utilizing our unique gifts and talents rather than longing for what others possess.

    Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. ~Philippians 4:11

    1. Stewardship of talents: The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) teaches us about the responsibility we have to use and develop the gifts and abilities entrusted to us. Comparison can hinder our ability to steward our talents effectively, as we may become preoccupied with what others are doing instead of focusing on developing our own skills. By recognizing the value of our unique abilities and investing in their growth, we can fulfill our role as faithful stewards.

    “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. Now after a long time, the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.     But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” ~Mark 10:43-45

    1. Finding identity in Christ: The Bible reminds us that our true identity is found in Christ (Galatians 2:20). When we constantly compare ourselves to others, we risk placing our identity and worth in external measures of success and validation. By anchoring our identity in Christ and seeking His approval above all else, we free ourselves from the destructive cycle of comparison and find the freedom to express our creativity without seeking validation from the world.

    I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. ~Galatians 2:20

    God, through the Bible, encourages us to embrace our uniqueness, find contentment and gratitude, steward our talents, serve others, and find our identity in Christ. By aligning our thinking and actions with these principles, we can break free from the negative effects of comparison, nurture our creativity, and leave a lasting legacy that reflects God’s design and purpose for our lives.

    As a teacher, I’ve found that it’s easy to get caught up in the never-ending to-do lists, obligations, and responsibilities that often dominate my life. In our fast-paced lives filled with numerous responsibilities and obligations, it’s easy to get caught up in the “I Have To” mindset. We often focus solely on our professional commitments and forget to appreciate the precious moments and opportunities that we “get to” experience. Let’s dive into the importance of finding a balance between our “have to” tasks and the “get to” and highlight the significance of cherishing relationships, giving back, and making time for ourselves.

    Shifting Perspectives: From “Have To” to “Get To”:

    Before we get too far…I want to highlight that even our “Have to” tasks should be viewed as an “I get to” task. When we view our responsibilities as burdensome tasks, we risk neglecting the positive aspects and opportunities they present. By reframing our mindset and recognizing that we “get to” fulfill these obligations, we can approach them with gratitude and enthusiasm. Embracing this perspective enables us to appreciate the inherent value and growth potential that lies within our daily routines.

    It’s worth noting…if you feel stuck…like “you have to do” the job you’re in…it’s probably time to get a new job. Life is too short for us to be stuck in a job (or any situation/place) we despise. At the end of the day, we have the power to pull ourselves out of something that steals our joy instead of encouraging joy! Remember that!

    Nurturing Relationships:

    One of the most important aspects of our lives is the relationships we build with our loved ones. However, these relationships often take a backseat to our professional commitments. By recognizing that we “get to” spend time with family and friends, we can prioritize nurturing these connections. Whether it’s sharing a meal, engaging in meaningful conversations, or participating in enjoyable activities together, these “get to” moments contribute to our overall happiness and well-being.

    Helping Others and Giving Back:

    Beyond our immediate circles, there is immense fulfillment in helping others and giving back to our communities. While our work may demand a significant portion of our time, it’s crucial to remember that we “get to” make a positive impact on the lives of others. Whether through volunteering, mentorship, or small acts of kindness, these “get to” moments provide a sense of purpose and create a ripple effect of positivity in society.

    Balancing our “have to” and “get to” moments is crucial for leading a fulfilling and meaningful life. By embracing a perspective that acknowledges the value and opportunities within our obligations, we can ensure that we don’t neglect the joys of spending time with loved ones, helping others, and taking care of ourselves. Remember, it’s not about escaping our responsibilities but rather appreciating and balancing the diverse aspects of the things we do daily, ultimately leading to a happier and more blessed life.

    Finding joy and satisfaction in our work and daily activities is easy when we recognize them as gifts from God. God encourages us to appreciate the opportunities we have and to derive fulfillment from the work we do and the blessings we receive. By embracing the “I get to” mindset, we can cultivate a sense of gratitude and find contentment in both our responsibilities and the enjoyable moments we “get to” experience.

    “What do people really get for all their hard work? I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. I want to explore the various dimensions of a healthy lifestyle that Courtney and I have identified as we’re progressed down the path of healthy living. By embracing a holistic approach, we can cultivate a well-rounded and fulfilling life.

    1. Mental Focus: Sharpening Your Cognitive Abilities

    Living a healthy lifestyle goes hand in hand with nurturing our mental well-being. Regular physical exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep contribute to improved cognitive function, memory retention, and mental focus. Engaging in activities that challenge your brain, such as puzzles, learning a new language, or playing a musical instrument, can also enhance mental acuity. By prioritizing mental focus, you can optimize your productivity, creativity, and overall quality of life.

    Weight loss is often accompanied by a host of health benefits that extend far beyond aesthetic improvements. Regular exercise and a nutritious diet can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight can boost your immune system, increase energy levels, and promote better sleep patterns. By focusing on overall health rather than just weight loss, you can enjoy a myriad of physical benefits that contribute to longevity and vitality. Through our journey, I’ve been able to get off of a plethora of meds. That’s good physically…and financially. Buying medicines in this current atrocious economy can get freaking expensive!

    1. Smaller Clothes: Celebrating Your Body’s Transformation

    While weight loss may result in a smaller clothing size, it’s essential to shift our perspective from obsessing over the numbers to celebrating the positive changes in our bodies. Embracing a healthy lifestyle leads to improved body composition, increased muscle tone, and enhanced physical strength. By focusing on how you feel in your own skin, you can cultivate self-confidence, body positivity, and a healthy body image. Remember, health is not defined solely by dress sizes but by the strength, resilience, and well-being of your entire being.

    As a side note: If you’re going through a lifestyle change that has you needing new clothes on a regular basis (because of weight loss), I’d like to suggest shopping at The Salvation Army or Goodwill. They have clothes in all sizes, and they are very inexpensive. As noted previously…this current economy stinks. You can find really nice clothes for prices that won’t break (what’s left of) the bank at either establishment.

    1. Knowledge Growth: Expanding Your Intellectual Horizons

    A healthy lifestyle extends beyond physical pursuits. Engaging in intellectual activities, such as reading books, fosters personal growth and knowledge expansion. Reading provides a wealth of benefits, including reduced stress, improved cognitive abilities, and enhanced empathy. By embracing books as a part of your wellness routine, you can stimulate your mind, gain new perspectives, and cultivate a lifelong love for learning.

    I’ve personally read 10 books in the past 12 months (originally required by 75 Hard and Live Hard…no I just enjoy it). That’s more books than I’ve read my whole life. My knowledge base is growing exponentially. It’s been a beautiful experience.

    1. Spiritual Growth: Nurturing the Soul

    Living a healthy lifestyle involves nourishing not only the body and mind but also the soul. Engaging in spiritual practices such as prayer, reading the bible, and attending health and well-being groups that are Christ-centered can promote emotional well-being, reduce stress, and foster a sense of purpose and inner peace. Cultivating spiritual growth allows you to tap into your inner strength, resilience, and connection to something greater than yourself, ultimately enhancing your overall well-being.

    A large part of the reading materials I’ve read during my healthy journey has been faith-based books that promote biblical living. It has helped me mentally…and it’s been a blessing for my family life.

    Bottom Line Y’all…

    While weight loss is undoubtedly a significant aspect of leading a healthy lifestyle, it’s important to recognize and embrace the holistic nature of wellness. By broadening our perspective to include mental focus, health benefits, smaller clothes, knowledge growth through reading books, and spiritual growth, we can create a more balanced and fulfilling life. Remember, true health encompasses the mind, body, and Holy Spirit, and by nurturing all these aspects, we can achieve a comprehensive and sustainable state of well-being.

    365 Days Of Live Hard: 75 Hard, Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3


    Wow! There honestly is no other word that better sums up what I’ve experienced in the last 365 days…except…WOW!

    Committing to the Live Hard Program this past year has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever attempted…and one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever endured. Beginning with 75 Hard way back on May 15, 2022…all the way through completing Phase 1 (January 2023), Phase 2 (March 2023), and (as of 12 A.M. yesterday morning…March 15, 2023) Phase 3. But it has been a blessing in disguise. 

    A quick recap of the events that led up to me starting 75 Hard. 

    For a deep dive into the “who, what, when, where, why, and how” of what led to me taking on Andy Fisella’s 75 Hard Program and Live Hard Lifestyle, I encourage you to read Pivot Then Live It Part 1, Part2, Part 3, and Part 4. To sum it up…in March of 2022, I was on a flight to (and from) Las Vegas where we were going to celebrate my daughter’s 21st birthday. On the flight out to Vegas, I had to switch seats MULTIPLE TIMES until I got to a seat that could fit my 450-pound body AND didn’t violate FCC regulations (i.e. not an aisle seat). I was finally able to find a seat, BUT…in doing so, I was separated from my family AND I split up a family that had purchased seats together as well. All because I couldn’t fit into a “standard airline seat”. The trip home from Vegas was the exact same. It was ridiculous. I was embarrassed. I was in pain (the seats cut into my thighs). I felt horrible for having to split up families and for not being able to visit with my family during the flight. Something had to change.

    In addition to my “girth” issues, I was on high blood-pressure meds, as well as high cholesterol meds, and I was in the beginning stages of diabetes. The trifecta of Fat Boy syndrome. I was a cheeseburger away from a heart attack. At 51 years of age, it was pretty much a given that I was not going to be on the planet much longer. Something had to change.

    As soon as the wheels of the plane touched down in Austin, I was online researching how to get healthy. I knew I wanted to make changes that would result in lifelong change which meant a total change of all the unhealthy habits I had learned over the course of the past 25(ish) years. My wife and I had already been discussing getting rid of processed foods and preservatives, so I knew going in that I wanted to approach “healthy living” from that standpoint. That’s when I FOUND IT!

    The 75 Hard Program

    I honestly can’t remember what I typed into the search engine or on what website I first discovered Andy’s 75 Hard Program…but I did. It was a God thang. From that moment on, I tore the interwebs apart looking for any and all information I could about 75 Hard. Then I discovered The Real AF podcast…specifically…episode 208. 

    After learning as much as I could about the 75 Hard Program, deciding what “diet” I was going to follow (healthy foods, counting calories), and determining what exercise I wanted to do (cardio=walking), I was ready to go! Andy is big on “Start Now!” but I needed to get through end-of-year testing (I’m a teacher) and all of the stresses that go along with that (sorry Andy). So on May 15, 2022…I was off.

    For the following 75 days, I worked my @$$ off. I kept to a strict diet, maintained a regimented workout schedule, read my books, drank my water, didn’t drink any alcohol, and took my daily selfies. At the end of those initial 75 days…I had lost 89 pounds. BUT…more than the weight loss, I had read books that began to reignite my passion for following Christ’s plan for my life. I had instilled habits back into my life that I hadn’t incorporated in decades. I was able to get off meds that I had been taking for years. And most importantly…I was an example for my wife and daughters. 

    Throughout those first 75 days, my wife decided it was time for her to start getting back to living a healthy lifestyle. Because of my new health-conscious diet, Courtney (my wife) started eating like me. She decided to start walking once a day with me. And over the course of those 75 days of summer…she lost around 20(ish) pounds. By the time we reported back to school (she’s a teacher too), our lives had drastically changed…for the better.

    Unfortunately, I didn’t learn about the “Live Hard” program (the 365-day program) until December 2022. Where most people spread out the 4 separate phases throughout the year, the majority of Live Hard was done at the end of my 365-day journey because I started Phase 1 so late.

    For those who aren’t aware (like I was), after finishing 75 Hard, participants have the option to continue their personal development journey for the rest of the year (ending exactly one year from the day they started 75 Hard). Phase 1 is a 30-day version of 75 Hard with the added tasks of: 1) taking a cold shower every day; 2) 10 minutes of visualization a day; and 3) 3 “Power Tasks” (things you need to complete for the day) per day. Phase 2 is simply the same tasks from 75 Hard…but for 30 days. And Phase 3 includes all of the daily tasks from 75 Hard, PLUS…1) a random act of kindness; 2) a cold shower; 3) 3 Power Tasks; 4) and you must talk to a complete stranger every day (actual conversations…not “Hi”). Phase 3 must be completed over the course of the last 30 days of the year from the time you start 75 Hard.

    Phase 1

    Phase 1 was brutal. It was the dead of winter, and where a typical Central Texas winter is in the ’40s-’50s…this year was crazy cold. So a lot of our workouts were in freezing rain (or sleet) and 20-degree weather. For this phase, I had to add a cold shower…which is not a big deal since I always take cold showers after a workout…something I picked up playing sports in high school. 

    I also had to include 3 Power List tasks in my daily routine. This was actually awesome. Adding three items to your action list helps to build much-needed habits…healthy positive habits. One aspect of our personal development journey we’ve focused on the entire time has been that of creating positive habits that will keep us moving forward spiritually, mentally, and physically. The Power List tasks helped in that area tremendously. 

    Another additional daily routine that you have to do during Phase 1 is 10 minutes of self-visualization. I’m a daydreamer, so I feel like I do this quite a bit…BUT…I made it a point to be specific. I visualized what I wanted my life to look like in the next year. Where I wanted to be in my job, my relationships, and my personal life. It was actually a very beneficial and rewarding practice. Even if you’re not taking part in the Live Hard Program, I encourage you to do this. The process actually helps you create a roadmap that you need to follow to accomplish the milestones and goals you want to attain in life. 

    Phase 2

    The daily tasks associated with Phase 2 are identical to the daily tasks performed in 75 Hard: 2 workouts a day (one has to be outside); follow a diet; read 10 pages of a self-help book; drink 1 gallon of water a day; no alcohol; take a progress picture; NO CHEATING OR START OVER.

    Phase 2 has to be started 30 days after Phase 1. The idea behind Phase 2 is to acclimate your mind and body to the process of MOMENTUM! Constantly building upon the habits and processes that you built through 75 Hard and Phase 1. For me…it did just that. The overarching benefit from this entire process has been getting rid of bad habits, and replacing them with healthy habits that will benefit you for the rest of your life. 

    In all honesty, coming out of high school and college, I had healthy habits. Really healthy habits. I was working out constantly. I was eating healthy. I played basketball almost every day. I was building and cultivating relationships. I was doing all the right things. BUT…somewhere along the way, I became complacent…lazy…a slug. All of my healthy habits were replaced by extremely unhealthy habits which lead to me being morbidly obese, financially strapped, and extremely lacking in the area of spiritual growth. IT HAPPENS TO THE BEST OF US! The good news is…we can pivot from a life of stagnant growth to a life of continuous improvement. I can’t express how thankful I am that I discovered 75 Hard!!!

    Phase 3

    This brings us to Phase 3. The fourth and final stage of the Live Hard Program. 30 days ago (April 15, 2023) I began this final leg of my yearlong journey. This last step includes all of the daily tasks performed in 75 Hard…PLUS… we gotta take that cold shower, we have to talk to a random stranger (daily), AND we have to perform a random act of kindness. 

    I actually love the addition of talking to a stranger and random acts of kindness as I make it a point to do this as often as I can. Being in ministry for many, MANY years, this has honestly become second nature. In fact, when I explained the whole process to my pastor, he immediately wanted to know how we could implement this into our outreach efforts. #WorkingOnIt

    By this point, the books I was reading had shifted (from biblical expectations of men and the impact we can have on our family, our community, and the world as a whole when we strive to seek and follow God’s plan for our life) to biblical principles of finance and business. Courtney and I are currently walking through starting a business (actually multiple) and we are researching as much as we can about starting a Christ-centered business. I have to be honest…I’ve read more in the last 365 days than I ever did in the previous 51 years of my life. For years I allowed the excuse of being dyslexic keep me from reading. I put that “B*tch Voice” (as Andy calls it) to rest!


    So, what impact has implementing positive life changes (with reference to spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being) had on my life? Here are a few of the results I’ve identified…

    1. Mental Focus- I’m more focused and driven than ever before. I’m able to create a strategy to accomplish a task, put the strategy to work…and succeed. This is huge seeing as how I’m a bit ADHD. Squirrel!
    2. Confidence- I’ve always been pretty confident, but now…I know when I walk into a room, I’ve accomplished something very few people have ever done.
    3. Less Stress- Increased physical activity is great for lowering stress. It’s given me a better mood and it’s a great way to distract me from the stupid crap that happens on the daily in America and around the world.
    4. Increased Knowledge- I’ve read 10 books since starting this new healthy lifestyle thanks to the Live Hard Program. I’ve learned more in the last 365 days than I did when I was getting my Master’s degree and pursuing my Doctorate.
    5. Inches- My waist has gone from a size 56 to a size 38-40 (depending on the brand). This makes finding britches a whole lot easier…and less expensive.
    6. Not As Extra- My shirts have gone from 6XL to 2X-3X (depending on the brand). Again…makes shopping for clothes simpler (since I can find these sizes anywhere) and less expensive (fewer materials equals cheaper cost).
    7. Say No To Drugs- Because of my healthy diet and the weight loss that has come with it…I’m no longer on Blood Pressure meds, High Cholesterol meds, and I’m not knocking on the door of diabetes.
    8. I Fit In- I can now fit in “normal” chairs, restaurant booths, and stadium seating. I can’t wait to fly next to see how well I fit in airline chairs (without the seatbelt extension)!
    9. New Improved Diet- Our diet now consists of all-natural beef, pork, and chicken. The majority of our fruits and vegetables are straight from the garden (via farmers markets and produce stands). And processed crap and foods heavy on preservatives are pretty much GONE! It’s been amazing…and delicious! The food we purchase is more expensive because we choose to support mom-and-pop farms and ranches, BUT our overall grocery costs are around the same as they were because we are no longer spending hundreds of dollars a month on CRAP like chips, cookies, candy, and sodas. We eat good y’all!
    10. Lighten Up- Over the course of the last 365 days, I’ve lost 197 pounds. I can now run up and down stairs. I can take a walk from here to there without being out of breath. I’m not always hot…which will save money on the electricity bill over the summer months. And I’m able to use “regular” items like folding chairs without worrying about them breaking under my weight…or avoiding them altogether.
    11. GROWTH MINDSET- The BIGGIE! This overall experience has given me a new mental stance. I no longer see defeat…I see a challenge that I can overcome. I no longer make excuses…I make a plan and I accomplish my milestones and goals. I no longer see completion in goals…I see goals as milestones to achieve before MOVING ON! My heart to serve others has grown exponentially because I truly want to help others achieve what Courtney and I have achieved…and continue to achieve. This whole experience has been a complete blessing. I can’t wait to see what the next 365 days have in store!

    Bottom Line Y’all…

    My 75 Hard and Live Hard experience has been AWESOME!!! Where there was once a lazy fat man who was afraid to tackle even the smallest challenges now stands a healthy, fit, confident man who is ready to conquer the world. I have no doubt that if a challenge arises over the course of the rest of my life…I’ll be able to meet the challenge head-on…and CRUSH IT!

    Life is a precious gift, meant to be cherished and lived to the fullest. I’ve heard it said that “Life is not lost by dying! Life is lost by not living!!” In other words, it is not merely the passing of time that diminishes the quality of our lives, but rather our failure to embrace opportunities and live with purpose. In this fast-paced world, it is essential to break free from the mundane and seize every moment to create a life that brings us joy. 

    Over the past year, I’ve come to realize that the mediocre, pointless, non-productive life I was living wasn’t benefiting me, wasn’t benefiting my family, wasn’t benefiting my community, and it was not benefiting God. I was simply going through the motions. I felt as though I had limits, and I was in a position where I wasn’t going to change in any area of my life. I felt like my health was as good as it was going to get. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high risk of heart attack were just going to be factors that I lived with.

    Furthermore, I became comfortable with the idea that the amount of money I was bringing in from being a teacher (married to a teacher) was going to be the norm. We weren’t going to have the big vacation trips, dependable cars, and the ability to repair certain parts of our home that needed attention. That’s the life we chose (teaching) because we have the heart to help children, so money was never that big of an issue. We were used to living paycheck to paycheck…and that’s just how it was going to be.

    Add to that the fact that my relationship with my wife, family, friends, and God, were simply existing. They weren’t growing and prospering. There was not much effort put into them because I had no time…and when I did…I was usually so tired from putting out fires in the classroom or trying to scrounge up extra money by any means necessary to pay bills that I couldn’t put in the work to build those precious relationships.

    Something had to give! I realized I needed a new mindset. I needed to make all of these areas a priority! I had to spend time rebuilding my health and wellness, my finances, and my relationships. I started by re-establishing communications with God. I began to seek His will for my life. I quickly realized that my current health situation (#MorbidlyObese) was holding me back from reaching my full potential. He needed me to be at top performance. The “temple” was lacking…’cause I was slacking! So I immediately began researching ways to get healthy (physically, mentally, and spiritually). I came across Andy Frisella’s “75 Hard Program”…and the rest was history. 

    Throughout this year-long process, I’ve learned some extremely valuable life lessons. One of the biggest realizations has been the fact that if we choose to remain in our mediocre and non-productive life…sadly, we’ll succeed in merely existing! BUT…if we strive to create the life God intends…wants…needs for us to live… we’ll succeed beyond our own comprehension. He’s not going to trust us with a fulfilling life if we are content with living an average life. We must be willing to take a chance on ourselves and embrace the idea of personal growth if we are going to live a fulfilling life.

    How do we do that Mitch??? Let’s look at a few valuable steps we can take as we strive to embrace opportunities and live with a purpose and explore the importance of taking chances, embracing personal growth, and striving to live a life that truly fulfills us.

    1. Seize Opportunities and Take Chances:

    Living life to the fullest means breaking free from our comfort zones and seizing opportunities as they come. It’s easy to get caught up in routines and fear of the unknown, but taking chances is the key to personal growth and fulfillment. By stepping outside our comfort zones, we expose ourselves to new experiences, people, and perspectives, which can enrich our lives in unimaginable ways. Whether it’s pursuing a new career, embarking on an adventure, or trying something entirely different, taking chances opens doors to new possibilities and allows us to discover our true potential.

    1. Embrace Personal Growth:

    To live a life that brings us joy, we must prioritize personal growth. This involves constantly learning, evolving, and expanding our horizons. Each day offers opportunities for growth, whether it’s learning a new skill, reading a thought-provoking book, or engaging in meaningful conversations. When we invest in ourselves…in personal development… we gain valuable insights, become more adaptable, and develop the resilience needed to overcome challenges. Putting an emphasis on personal growth allows us to navigate life’s ups and downs with a positive mindset and empowers us to create the life we desire.

    1. Create a Life of Joy:

    Living life to the fullest is synonymous with creating a life that brings us joy. It’s crucial to identify what truly makes us happy and pursue it wholeheartedly. This could mean spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies and passions, or cultivating meaningful relationships. Additionally, finding purpose and meaning in our daily lives can bring a profound sense of fulfillment. By aligning our actions with our values and priorities, we create a life that is authentic and fulfilling.

    1. Work Towards Your Dreams:

    Living life to the fullest requires effort and determination. It’s not enough to merely dream; we must take action to turn our dreams into reality. This involves setting goals, creating a plan, and working diligently towards achieving them. It may require perseverance, resilience, and even sacrificing short-term comforts for long-term fulfillment. By busting our butts and putting in the necessary work, we create the life we want and deserve.

    Through John 10:10, God tells us, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.”

    In this verse, Jesus speaks of the purpose of His coming—to offer abundant life to those who follow Him. It reminds us that life is not meant to be stolen or destroyed by fear, complacency, or negativity. Instead, through faith and following the teachings of Jesus, we can experience a life that is rich, meaningful, and overflowing with joy. It encourages us to embrace the fullness of life and not settle for less.

    This scripture serves as a reminder that true fulfillment and a life lived to the fullest can be found in our connection with God, in pursuing His purpose for us, and in embracing the abundant life He offers.

    Life is a beautiful gift from God that is meant to be lived to the fullest.     As teachers, we have the privilege of enjoying a much-needed break during the summer months. This time away from the stresses of the classroom provides us with an opportunity to reconnect with the things in our life that are truly important. While many of us may be tempted to simply relax and enjoy our time off, it’s essential that we use these months to reconnect to, and focus on, our physical and mental health, as well as our relationships with loved ones and our faith.

    Reconnect With Our Body and Mind!

    Taking care of our physical and mental health is crucial for teachers, as it directly impacts our overall well-being and our ability to perform well in the classroom. Teachers are often under immense pressure to meet the demands of the job, including long hours, lesson planning, grading, and dealing with challenging students and parents. This can lead to stress, anxiety, burnout, and even physical health problems.

    Last year, I made a choice to start 75 Hard at the end of the school year. I wanted the summer months to be a catalyst for what has become a new and improved me…a healthy lifestyle that has been an amazing achievement…both physically and mentally. Healthy eating habits as well as fitness routines have been set in place for good, and that could not have happened without that 2 month long section of time that allowed me to properly kick off my health and wellness journey.

    During the summer break, teachers have an excellent opportunity to prioritize their physical health. Regular exercise is essential for maintaining good health, and it can be a great stress reliever. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters that can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, exercise can help increase energy levels, improve sleep quality, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

    Eating a healthy and balanced diet is also crucial for maintaining good health. During the school year, teachers may not have time to prioritize healthy eating, but the summer months provide an opportunity to establish healthy eating habits. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can provide essential nutrients that our bodies need to function properly. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking enough water throughout the day can help maintain optimal physical health.

    Mental health is equally important to physical health, and it’s essential to prioritize our mental well-being during the summer break. Teaching can be emotionally taxing, and teachers may experience stress, anxiety, and burnout as a result. Activities such as meditation, mindfulness, and therapy can be helpful in promoting mental health and reducing stress. These activities can help us develop coping mechanisms, reduce negative thoughts and emotions, and increase our overall resilience.

    Taking care of our physical and mental health during the summer break is essential for teachers. Prioritizing our health through regular exercise, healthy eating, and mental health practices can help us feel better physically and mentally, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase our overall well-being. By taking care of ourselves during the summer break, we can return to the classroom feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to meet the challenges of a new school year.

    Reconnect With Family and Friends

    In addition to focusing on our own health, it’s also important to use this time to strengthen our relationships with family and friends. As teachers, we understand the importance of building relationships with our students, but it’s just as important to prioritize our relationships with our loved ones. Teaching is a demanding profession that often requires us to work long hours, grade papers on weekends, and attend school events in the evenings. These demands can make it difficult to find time to invest in our relationships with family and friends during the school year.

    Last summer when we started our healthy journey, we were blessed to have the opportunity to spend time with our daughters. Getting reacquainted after months of focusing on classroom issues and curriculum development. We were able to hang out with our daughters (and their boyfriends) and reconnect with them. Catch up on what we’d missed during the “busy months”. We were also blessed to have them join us on a couple of trips to the park to work out and the gym to lift. It was truly a blessing!

    During the summer break, we have the opportunity to refocus on our relationships with loved ones. Spending quality time with family and friends can help us recharge our batteries and remind us of the things that truly matter in life. Whether it’s going on a vacation, taking a day trip, or simply spending time together at home, making time for our loved ones is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships.

    Spending time with family and friends can also have a positive impact on our mental health. Studies have shown that social support is an essential component of mental well-being. Having a strong support system can help us manage stress, reduce anxiety and depression, and increase our overall happiness.

    In addition to nurturing existing relationships, the summer break can also provide an opportunity to build new relationships. Whether it’s joining a club or organization, attending a networking event, or simply striking up a conversation with someone new, building new relationships can be an enriching experience that can add value to our lives.

    It’s important to remember that relationships take work, and we need to invest time and effort into them to make them thrive. As teachers, we have the privilege of having summers off, which provides us with a perfect opportunity to prioritize our relationships with loved ones. By making an effort to spend quality time with family and friends, we can strengthen our bonds and cultivate deeper, more meaningful relationships.

    Reconnect With Our Faith

    For many teachers, faith is an essential part of our lives, providing us with a source of strength and guidance in both good times and bad. As we work to nurture the minds and hearts of our students, it’s important that we also take the time to nurture our own faith, and a great time to reconnect with God is during the summer months.

    When I started 75 Hard last year, I intentionally chose to read books (a large foundational part of 75 Hard…and Live Hard…is reading…learning from others how to be better) that talked about the man’s role in the family, the community, and God’s great plan. The reading, and learning, have been more rewarding than the weight loss…being real right now! I’ve grown more in my faith over the past 12 months than I ever have…and I was a preacher. Those initial summer months help instill the intentional reconnecting with God that I needed to catapult my overall health and wellness mindset. It’s been amazing y’all!

    During the school year, it can be difficult to prioritize our faith amidst the demands of our jobs and personal lives. However, the summer break provides us with an opportunity to refocus on our spiritual well-being. By taking time to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ, we can grow in our faith and find the peace and strength we need to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.

    One way to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ is through daily Bible reading and prayer. Spending time in prayer and reflection each day can help us feel more connected to God and gain a deeper understanding of His teachings. We can also use this time to meditate on the lessons we’ve learned over the past year and seek guidance for the challenges that lie ahead.

    In addition to daily prayer and Bible reading, we can also use the summer months to minister to those in need. Whether it’s through volunteering at a local charity, participating in a mission trip, or simply reaching out to those in our community who may be struggling, serving others can be a powerful way to deepen our connection with God and live out His teachings in our daily lives.
